1885 Red Silk Bustle by CostumierClare 1885 Red Silk Bustle by CostumierClare
Made in the final year of my Costume degree. A bustle loosely based on an 1870's design that I re-interpreted to fit an 1885 silhouette. The military style rouleau work on the front panel was inspired by an 1885 jacket, and took a fairly long time to both make and turn the self-fabric rouleau and apply the design. The entire dress, including the buttons which I had made by a local button supplier, is made from the same red silk. The two-toned effect is from using the reverse side of the fabric for alternating panels. I also made the matching hat of black felt with red silk velvet and black dupioni silk accents and hand beaded hat band.

This is fu#&king INSANE!!  Every detail is amazing in it's quality of workmanship, design, and dedication!!  I can't even begin to imagine how many yards of fabric or the approximate time in hours it took for you to finish this masterpiece.  I bow to a Master Costumer!!

Absolutely beautiful. Truly, it's too bad this isn't more a common style today.

Fabulous work! The detail is stunning. I particularly like the asymmetry of the front panel--a great touch. The subtlety of reversing the fabric add so much. A very beautiful piece!

This is brilliant!!! I love the "two toned" effect, the fitting on the back (SWOON) and all the detailing!
The piping on the front is made of the same red silk, yes? Did you cover a cord with some bias cut? How many yards of trim went into that many curly-cues?

Yes - the rouleau is the same silk! I covered cord - it was 5 lengths of 2 meters all up in the front, so around 10 meters. It's not one continuous piece - there's several joins hidden where the cord crosses itself. Thanks for the compliments!

I love the visual you created by using the front and back of the fabric. I also really like the style lines on the back of the jacket. Excellent work :)

Breathtaking. Absolutely a masterpiece of skill and creativity- it looks like it belongs in a House of Worth exhibit- which is the greatest compliment anyone doing mid to late 19th century costuming can be given, of course. Exquisite work, from the choice of color and fabric to the construction and finishing touches.

Can you get patterns for these different styles anywhere ? I would love to do something like this but really don't know where to start without a pattern

I was working on a lot of otherr projects at the time, so it was on and off over the course of a year. All up, probably close to a month of dedicated work time.
